Murder of Absalom Echols by Johnson Hammock
Columbus Enquirer Newspaper Article
16 Dec 1840, Columbus, Muscogee, Georgia, USA

Horrid Murder!!

500 dollars reward will be paid for the apprehension and delivery to the proper officers, of one Johnson Hammock, who on Tuesday last murdered Absalom Echols, at his residence in Macon county, Alabama. Said Hammock is five feet ten inches thigh; large, round, full and scared face, weighs about 180 pounds, a little round shouldered, little gouty in his feet, black hair and beard, with dark skin and keen black eyes; is very fond of drinking liquor, and while drinking often calls himself John, and brags much of his wealth in Texas and the United States, and often speaks of his town property in Mobile, and a check for fifteen hundred or two thousand dollars on the bank of Mobile. He is a carpenter by trade; is also fond of the lowest sort of gambling.

He had on a blue dress coat, with metal buttons, very thick on the breast; steel-mixed pantaloons, which fit very tight.

A few words about the families that inter-married. John Echols married Frances FORMBY, she is the D/O Nicholas Gunn FORMBY & Sarah Ann AKIN. Frances's brother, Nathan Gunn FORMBY Sr, married John Echols' sister Tabitha A ECHOLS.

Since we are on the surname AKIN, we have Edward
AKIN married Rebecca ECHOLS. I still have not located his parents but here is more on the Akin inter-marriages - I assume he has to part of this same family. Sarah Ann AKIN is the D/O Thomas AKIN & Elizabeth GOODE. Thomas & Elizabeth had had another daughter, Jean AKIN, who married James FARMER. Two of the children of Jean AKIN & James FARMER, Sally & Marlin, married into the ECHOLS line. Sally married Moses ECHOLS (he was also married to Elizabeth "Betsy" TERRY - more on the TERRY'S below) and her brother Marlin married Elizabeth ECHOLS, the sister of Moses.

Now on to the surname TERRY. This one is/was a bit confusing. Here is what I've managed to put/piece together. Obediah ECHOLS married Elizabeth "Betsy" TERRY the D/O Joseph TERRY & Susannah BIBB. Another woman named Elizabeth "Betsy" TERRY,  that m. Moses ECHOLS, had a sister Anna TERRY that married Evans W ECHOLS who is the S/O
Joseph Moses ECHOLS & Elizabeth WYNNE. Elizabeth & Anna TERRY are sisters and the D's/O David TERRY & Elizabeth LUCK. The two Elizabeth "Betsy" TERRY girls are two different people and are cousins.

Let's move on to the surname WYNNE. Maj Joshua WYNNE married Mary Margaret JONES and had William M WYNNE Sr.. William Sr. married Mary Frances ECHOLS the D/O William ECHOLS I & Sarah TURNER. Thomas WYNNE Sr., the S/O William M WYNNE Sr & Martha Frances READ, married Mary ECHOLS, the D/O Richard E ECHOLS & Catherine "Caty" EVANS. The S/O Richard E ECHOLS & Catherine "Caty" EVANS,
Joseph Moses ECHOLS married Elizabeth WYNNE, the D/O William M WYNNE Sr. & Mary Frances ECHOLS. Mary ECHOLS, that married Thomas WYNNE Sr, parents Richard E ECHOLS & Catherine "Caty" EVANS, & Mary Frances ECHOLS, that married William M WYNNE Jr, parents William ECHOLS I & Sarah TURNER were brothers and S's/O John ECHOLS & Mary CAVE. The Echols girls were cousins.
While we're at it lets talk about the name IRVINE/IRVIN/IRWIN. These all seem to point to the same family members. It appears that initially Christopher used the spelling IRVINE (as shown at Early Colonial Virginia under Bedford County, VA) and his descendents dropped the "E" and used IRVIN. But, there are members of this part of the family that seems to have maintained a spelling of IRWIN as shown on some of the headstones [a son of Christopher and Prudence David IRWIN]. The two marriage records, or bonds actually, are handwritten and spell the name IRVIN. The marriage bonds are for Christopher & Louisa TUCKER.
Hopefully this will help clear up the relationships between these families and surname spelling variants.

  3. Hi, I found you via information on line about The History of the Echols Family by Milner Echols. What information do you have about Thomas Wynne who married Mary Echols? I have seen on line that they had a son named Obadiah Wynne who married Leona Bolton.. and then their son was John Wynn who married Susannah Owen. John Wynn/married Susannah Owen are the 3rd great grand parents of my husband. According to family records I had the father of John Wynn was John Wynne and then another John Wynne above him to William Wynne... But if I follow what's on line and refers to Milner Echols book the line would go: William Wynne, then Thomas Wynne/Mary Echols, the Obadiah Wynne/Leona Bolton, then John Wynn/Susannah Owen. If this is what you have in your information do you have any links to Wills or any other source that documents this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Annie-Laurie Wynn
